Pride - to desire the acknowledgement of one's worth by others.
Vanity - to desire the admiration of one's features, great or small, by others.
X - to desire the approval of one's inner being and character by others.
what could X be called? and where would it stand? if virtuous (and not sinful) pride is right and vanity is left, would X be on the middle ground? or, where pride is East and vanity is West, is X considered to be South rather than North (up, like right, is good/virtuous/right)? and then, what would the fourth component be?
and what, exactly, is the centre?

If pride is worth, vanity is appearance, X is inner being or soul then Y should be one's knowledge (assuming it can be separated from worth - not all thoughts have to be worth sth after all).
What they should be called is beyond me at the moment
thank you for the input, Sparrow.
the cross we are making here as a whole is pride, really - vanity is considered to be a part of it and so is X (and presumably Y). what we are trying to do is to separate the details and examine their elements. (just to make it clear and keep the bitchin-people away)
the East-West line could be perceived as an indicator of dependance. East is a pursuit for individuality and independence, demanding respect for one's decisions, thoughts, feelings.
the wild West is characterized by a deep dependance on others - strong willingfulness to impress shows a need for admiration (and warmth).
so, according to Sparrow, could Y be defined as: to desire the approbation of/for one's thoughts and judgement by others?
but we can't be sure. if East-West is the line of dependancy then what line would the North-South be?
the line of personal features?
philosophically, if we would have the soul as a governing aspect of character and spirit (vaim) as the governing aspect of mind, which one of them should be in the South?
it would be more comfortable to leave soul-spirit out of it - pride is a social phenomenon and we should constrain ourselves from leaving those boundaries.
I'd still like to find a better characteristic for the Nort-South line. to have character at one end and knowledge/thoughts in the other seems unsatisfactory for our little mental masturbation. maybe we should re-define X?
